During the upcoming school holidays we look forward to a new section of covered walkway above the stairs next to the COLA and also the removal of the old library so that we can work on the Creative Play Spaces area for which we will need some working bees and volunteers for the foundations work. The highlight this month was of course the school show “A Space Oddity” which was fabulous. Thank you to all who made this a success. Here’s to another great month. Moved by: Tristen Cosgrove, Seconded: Ruth McLeod
Principal’s Report: I’d like to begin by thanking the P&C for your supportive efforts over the past few weeks. As we have so many school-based events occurring at this time of the year, the staff and I greatly appreciate your active and on-going support. Whether it is Book Week, School Musical, Storytime or helping with the Fathers’ Day BBQ, your time and participation is great and adds enormously to the strength of our school community.
I would like to, once again, acknowledge and thank Tristen for his persistence in preparing the applications for community grants. The latest application is for a technology upgrade for all of our permanent classrooms. This upgrade should assist in ‘speeding up’ our current network.
I also thank the wider community for your support of this year’s Book Week activities, which are always a lot of fun. The Book Fair was very well supported with sales totalling in the vicinity of $5,000.00, from which the school receives a commission of $990.00. This money then goes directly to the library to purchase reading materials.
Tomorrow we will be hosting our final Storytime from 1:45-2:45. On this occasion we will be talking to parents about Best Start, school costs and communication and basic school administration procedures whilst the pre-schoolers are busy in the classroom.
Enjoying the recent School Musical was a genuine privilege. It demonstrated just how talented some of our students are. We had just over 100 students involved in the musical, whether it was performing, singing with the choir or supporting back-stage, it really was a major achievement for our school.
I sincerely thank all the parents who supported with props, costumes, audio-visual effects, canteen & ticket sales. The musical was a great community success.
Just for something completely different, our grounds are about to have some attention as we embark on Stage 4 of our Creative Play Spaces upgrade. Before these improvements can occur, however, we will need to coordinate a few other movements, including: • The relocation of Room 4 (K/1F) which is currently underway; and • The removal of the library.
Following the school break we plan to construct another retaining wall below the Games Court. This will be followed by the installation of the playground equipment etc.
It is envisaged that the cost of the project will be approximately $75,000.00 excluding GST.
As I am keen to place the order to purchase the playground equipment I will need to request a donation from the P&C for $31,088.80 for the purchase of the equipment. I will then place the order which should take approximately 12 weeks to arrive for installation. The install costs will be $18,467 (ex-GST) which I will request closer to the install date. The school will need to meet the costs of the retaining walls, soft-fall and possibly a security fence (pool), which I estimate to be close to $30,000.00. Again, on behalf of the students and staff, I sincerely thank the P&C for their long-term support with the Creative Play Spaces project. We have had our challenges so seeing the completion of these last stages will be a significant achievement.
We have lots to look forward to over the next few weeks, including: • Touch Football Gala Day for girls & boys on Friday, September 11; • Rugby Union Gala Day on Monday, September 14; • Stage 3 will be holding their Games Day on Tuesday, September 15; • S3 will be departing for the National Capital on September 16 & returning on September18; and • Term 3 will be concluding on Friday, September 18.
Term 4 will commence on Tuesday, October 6 for both staff and students. I wish all families a restful holiday and look forward to seeing you all back here next term.
I thank the P&C and the parents of Soldiers Point Public School for your continued support throughout the term.

The term has flown by again. All is good in the Canteen, the urn has been repaired, we have both our broken fridges up and running and a new appliance for cooking ($59 electric frypan on 28/8/15) the massive amounts of pikelets that are consumed each week. Thank you to the P&C for their assistance in achieving these repairs. We are considering a meal deal next term, details to be discussed with the Canteen Committee. A huge thank you to those fabulous parents who are always willing to help and make life in the canteen very enjoyable. A special thanks to Deanne Cosgrove, always there and always smiling. School Improvement and Finance Committee Report: Meeting was held on the 2nd September, the minutes from the meeting can be read here: http://sppspc.weebly.com/sifc02092015.html Moved By: Ruth McLeod, Seconded by: Belinda Lavers Fundraising Committee Report: We’ve had a busy month, with the school musical being the main focus for our Events and Fundraising Team.
First of all, we’d like to thank all of the wonderful parents who really stepped up and supported the P&C over the last few weeks. The level of help that we received from people for pre-musical preparations, in the canteen on the nights, and for clean up was heartening. Also, thank you to Tanya Mackenzie for organising the raffle and lucky door prizes, and to Mr Gibson for reading all of the winners out and promoting the canteen and raffle at the musical.
A run down of what we achieved:
Mufti day was held on September 1st, raising $359.85 in donations. From this was deducted $64.85 of expenses for the BBQ held on the 23rd August. Total profit: $295.00
Over the 2 Musical Performance Nights, through the Raffle and the Space Cafe, we raised $1,215.00 profit, after all expenses. A great result, and a credit to the helpers manning the raffle table & the canteen on both nights. Thank you so much. The profits from the Mufti Day and the Musical, totalling $1,510.00 have been banked to the P&C account yesterday. We have also deposited an additional $250.00 to the Canteen account, for reimbursement of the canteen stock we used. We have provided a detailed account of this usage and reimbursement calculation to the Canteen Committee.
We were also able to collect over $100 in gold coin donations for the printed programs at the Musical. These funds were given to Simone on the night, for the school.
It has been a terrific month for the Events and Fundraising team, which we couldn’t have done without the support of the school staff and wonderful team of parent volunteers.
We plan on taking a back seat for the remainder of the school year with Year 6 fundraising asking for a lot of support from the school community in Term 4.
Finally, back to a follow up on earlier events, a draft Thank you certificate for Rotary has been drafted for approval, once everyone has approved we’ll send to Rotary for their generous support with the Twilight Markets and Welcome BBQ. Moved by: Trish Bray, Seconded by: Tristen Cosgrove
General Business:
The P&C is to confirm whether the Slushie Machine is covered by our insurance
The P&C was looking into changing banking however the current convenience of being able to do some banking with the current bank via the school on occasion means we will most likely stay with the current bank.
Creative Play Spaces –Thank you to “Play by Design” for the generous discount. Special mention to our Principal Simon Parson for managing this project and the ongoing assistance and support of the School Improvement and Finance Committee, especially Ruth MacLeod and the ongoing support of the P&C.
The P&C decided to make a donation now of $37,000 to Soldiers Point Public School. The P&C also decided to make a further donation of at least $18,500 from the P&C to Soldiers Point Public School which will also take place in Term 4. This is a minimum of $55,500 in total and we are very pleased to make such a donation. Soldiers Point Public School may decide to apply those funds towards the Creative Play Spaces project and new Covered Walkway above the stairs near the COLA.
Meeting Closed 8.40pm Next Meeting: Tuesday 13th October 2015 in the new library at 7pm
