Business
arising from previous meeting/s
Slushie machine in canteen; As discussed on
12th May meeting after Canteen report Anna-Maria Ford stated that
Port Stephens Ice beared the cost to replace the slushie machine in the canteen
that broke down due to human error when cleaning the machine. It was stated
that Port Stephens Ice will not incur such a cost should this happen again due
to human error. Anna-Maria Ford requested that a document was to be presented
to canteen staff to sign off on that they have been showed how to use and clean
the machine correctly, to avoid this happening for the remaining contract term.
Ruth McLeod requested that the document be presented to P&C first for
consideration before canteen staff sign anything and if they agree to the terms
listed by Port Stephens Ice who are providing the Slushie Machine in the School
Canteen under a contracted agreement.

President’s
Report
Welcome once again to all tonight. Thank you for all the efforts that
people put in to make P&C activities successful and enjoyable. Tonight we
have a guest speaker whom I am sure you will enjoy hearing from, Graham Oborn
of Soldiers Point Sailing School whom I have invited along. Later this month we
have the annual School Disco as well and thank you to all who helped with the
athletics carnival.
We are still awaiting payment for Community Building Partnership Grants,
all paperwork is in and I have spoken to them personally as well. It should be
any day, they tell me.
Here’s to another great month.

Principal’s
Report:
Principals report presented by Deputy Principal Ashley Pawley on behalf
of Simon Parson in his absence.
As I have mentioned previously, throughout 2014 / 2015, our teachers
have been implementing our new mathematics syllabus. The mathematics syllabus
is now embedded into our learning programs at the school and we will, with time
and experience, continue to deepen our understanding of the document and its
expectations across the strands & stages.
Mrs Egan has led much of our professional learning about the mathematics
syllabus and I have had her to attend this evening’s meeting to share a little
bit of information about it. Mrs Egan will also provide a few tips about some
great math’s applications which you may be able to use at home.
Mrs Egan’s presentation.
I’d like to, once again, acknowledge the school community for your
support of the voluntary technology contribution, which is supporting the
school in its endeavour to create a robust and integrated network for all to
maximise.
Not only has this initiative enabled us to improve our access via the
wireless network as well as replace ageing equipment, it enabled us to purchase
this IWB for the library.
The students have had an array of sporting opportunities already this
term and this is set to continue with school teams participating in softball,
rugby league and touch before term’s end. Impressively, we have already had 9
students selected to represent the school at Hunter Regional and /or State
events which is an awesome achievement.
Parents wishing to submit an application for the CAPA, Academic
Extension or Talented Sports classes at THS in 2016 will need to submit their
application to the High School by 2.00pm this Thursday, June 11.
For those applying for these classes you should note that it is not
necessary to request a separate reference for your child to accompany your
application as the school (SPPS) is required to complete Section 2 of the
application.
Please note that applications are to be lodged at Tomaree High School,
not SPPS.
The teachers are nearing completion of the Semester 1 student reports,
which shall be forwarded home on Wednesday, June 24. I trust that you find the
reports meaningful and constructive. I also remind parents that you are welcome
to arrange a meeting to see a teacher at any time via the appropriate manner
e.g. email / call to school.
School photos- similar to last year it would be appreciated if 1 or 2
members carry out an informal survey about the 2015 school photos to ascertain
if you’re happy to continue using Newcastle School Portraits in 2016.
Term will conclude on Friday, June 26.
We will be having a Staff Development Day on Monday, July 13, with all
students commencing on Tuesday, July 14.
A few items for your diaries:
The Opportunity Class testing day is Wednesday, July 22.
Education Week will be Week 3 of Term 3 and the school will be holding
an Open Day on Friday, July 31;
Stage 2 & 3 will be off to the theatre to see The 26 Storey
Treehouse on Thursday, July 28.
Our P-K transition, which has had a strong focus over the years, will
commence on the following dates:
Storytime (2015): August 27:general information & tour September 3:P&C/Canteen/Uniforms September 10: Best Start
Our Parent Information Session will be held on Tuesday, October 27, in the hall.
Kindergaten orientation will be run Weeks 8 & 9 of Term 4.
It would be great to enlist some P&C support and information for the
Storytime session on September 3 to talk about P&C / Canteen / Uniforms;
and then again at the Parent Information Session on October 27.
I thank the P&C and the parents of Soldiers Point Public School for
their continued support.

Mrs Egan
presented her report on the new mathematics syllabus with much enthusiasm and created
interest from those present in the meeting.
In short
she described the new syllabus as being derived from Naplan and integrating the
use of technology and applications to assist with student learning. Using hands
on materials within the classroom setting allowing the students to explore and
discover not just the right answer but to go deeper and broader on which path
they used to reach the right answer to develop the students thought processes of
problem solving. To create a better understanding of how and why we do maths
and how it relates within our society not just our classroom. Introducing and
using correct mathematical terminology for each stages. Not just handing
students stencils to complete but instead a maths diary for the use of
developing their thought processes to vocalise and communicate how they reached
the correct answer.

Canteen
Committee Report:
Canteen report presented
by Karen Jones on behalf of Paula Browne.
The Canteen would like
to thank all the wonderful volunteers that help week to week and those that
helped provide a sausage sizzle at the athletics carnival this term and the
very tasty lunch on mother’s day.
We could not do it without your support and we
have been lucky enough to gain a few new volunteers this term.
I would also like to send a thank you to
Howard who is the cleaner at the school. He transports heavy boxes of
supplies from the office to the canteen regularly without being asked to and as
this is not in his job description it is very much appreciated by myself in
particular.
The new system for
collection of lunch crates and extra items such as pastas and drinks from
separate windows has proven to be a great success, especially on our busiest
day Friday.
I would like to thank teachers for extra
patrols of the Canteen during the crazy hour, it has helped enormously and allows
a smoother, less stressful Friday lunch time.
The Canteen committee is
in the process of reviewing and updating our daily practices and procedures to
ensure we are up to date and providing the best service to our children as well
as looking after the health and safety of our volunteers.
The committee is looking at a few price
increases to come into effect next term to keep up with the cost of providing
freshly cooked foods. We would like to put into place a procedure for
providing food for those children who do not have any recess or lunch for
whatever reason.
This will be discussed
with the Principal over the next week and with approval will be effective as
soon as possible.
The Canteen is planning
a meal deal for the last day of term. It will consist of a slice of
Dominoes pizza and a poppa for $5.00. Pre-order forms will go out next
week with the Newsletter.
The Canteen committee
has decided not to be a part of the school musical evening and leave the
fundraising and food provision to the P& C for that event, of course the
Canteen and its facilities are available for use during both evenings.
The Canteen will be
offering food and beverages for Education Week as part of our fundraising for
the year. Details for that event will be available soon.
As always I would like
to thank the Committee, a wonderful dedicated group of ladies who not only
contribute their time, they make it a wonderful place to work, it is heart warming
to walk across the playground and hear laughter coming from the Canteen.

Uniform
Committee Report:
Current Balance:$5761.32

Payments this month:Nil
Total:$6091.32
We have been kept busy selling Polar Fleece, Bomber Jackets and Long
Sleeve Shirts since the last meeting. We have just had to order more to keep up
with the demand. (Approximately $3350.00 which will be due for payment at the
end of July.)
Karen Jones and Brooke Hill have decided to jointly be involved in the
operation of the Uniform Shop when I leave next year. They will both start to
be more involved in all aspects of running the Uniform Shop from next term.
I have documented Uniform Shop Procedures which includes all the
necessary information required to operate the Uniform Shop.
Moved By: Belinda Lavers, Seconded by: Karen Jones
Secretary
Anna-Maria Ford requested a copy of these documents detailing the procedures of
the uniform shop to enable the P & C to keep a soft copy on file for future
reference to pass onto future convenors if needed and/or should the folder be
misplaced. Belinda Lavers confirmed she will complete this request once she has
double checked all information is within this folder.
School
Improvement and Finance Committee Report:
Discussion by Ruth McLeod with the P&C about the communication
parent forum that the SIFC Committee held.
Our next main event is the school disco to be held on Thursday 25th
June. The new times are K-2 from 5-6pm, and Years 3-6 from 6.30-7.30pm. The new
location for the event is the auditorium in the Bowling Club. This is a larger
room, which we hope will accommodate our larger school community. DJ Tim Halls
has been confirmed, and we would like to thank Tim in advance for volunteering
his services yet again. There are two mothers from the school who will be
helping with getting the kids up and moving on the night. Danielle and Stella
are mums who are instruct zumba lessons, and have offered to help get up on
stage and direct some dance moves. We have also suggested that they can promote
their business at the disco with flyers or promotional materials at the table.
The notes for the disco will be hopefully printed by Simone and Bronwyn
and distributed via the students next week. This should allow plenty of time
for notes and payment to be returned to the office before the 25th.
We hope that this will alleviate congestion on the door on the night. White
Sands Bistro (SP BC) has donated a gift voucher, which we will use as an
incentive to get parents to return notes before the night.
We will also advertise for volunteers for the night within the
permission slip note going home, and within the Newsletter. As always it’s
lovely when some of the children’s School Teachers are able to come and join in
the fun too.
Moving on to future events, Term 3 will see the School Musical being
held early September.
We are still in consultation with the canteen committee about possible
provision of supplying food and drink on the night of the school musical, as a
P&C fundraiser.
Also as a fundraiser, School Banking seems to be running very smoothly.
We thank Julie Thomas & Nerelle Donnelly for their regular hard work &
promotion of this.
In General Business tonight, we look forward to hearing back from the
School Staff & Admin as to their Fundraising Wish List, giving us items in
particular that event funds can be raised towards. We will also ask for a
display of hands for those attending & planning to assist at the School
Disco, so we can assess how many additional volunteers we may need to rally.
Moved by: Trish Bray, Seconded by: Tristen Cosgrove.
All dates
and times have been confirmed for the school disco being held on the 25th
June. School banking has been a success with 136 kids already onboard. The
money generated for the school will be received from the bank on a quarterly
basis. The sub committee’s next meeting will focus on the School Musical, and
how the P & C can assist. They have also taken a copy of the School Staff
and admin wish list to be discussed at the next fundraising meeting.
General
Business:
Discussion was made about the position coming up in 2016 on whom would
run the uniform shop as Belinda Lavers who currently runs the shop will be
moving on next year. It was discussed and
noted in uniform committee report that Karen Jones and Brooke Hill will jointly
run the uniform shop.
Brenda Madden presented a draft survey for P&C to look at before it
is generated around the school community how many require after school care and
the logistics of it should it be offered.
Guest Speaker: Mrs Egan made a presentation on the new mathematics
syllabus. Details from this presentation
have been noted under principal’s report.
Guest Speaker: Graham Oborn discussed sailing school and the federal
government initiative and grants on offer to schools’ in taking up sailing
school. Discussed the benefits students gain when sailing and gave examples of
other schools currently enrolled in the program and how the students benefited.
Questions were raised in the meeting and discussed in great detail whether the
timing was suitable as the school community is still grieving over the tragedy
that occurred this year, and if other sporting programs were offered under this
government initiative. Graham left information for the P&C, school teachers
and admin staff to look into further and consider the opportunity, and if
interested to apply for funding prior to the closing date set out by the
federal government.
Meeting
Closed 9.10pm
Next
Meeting: 14th July 2015 in the School Administration block.
